Kaija Saariahon jousikvarteton mukaan nimetyn kamarimusiikkikonsertin taustalla on kaksi voimakasta sanaa – terra maa ja memoria muisti.
The concert begins with pianist Kirill Kozlovski interpreting François Couperin's pieces.
The titular piece Terra Memoria (2006), dedicated by Saariaho herself to "those who have departed," is the centerpiece. Saariaho described the earth in the title symbolizing her material, while memory represented her approach to working with it. In collaboration with the Oulu Symphony’s chamber musicians violinists Terhi Paldanius and Eriikka Maalismaa perform in this composition.
Another piece by Saariaho to be performed in the concert is Changing Light, an intimate composition written for soprano and violin. Saariaho, who has composed a significant amount of vocal music throughout her career, described following the dialogue of the chosen text in this piece, reflecting the fragility of uncertainty. Soprano Mari Palo and violinist Terhi Paldanius engage in the sensitive dialogue of the composition.
In the second half, pianist Kirill Kozlovski immerses us in the world of Johann Sebastian Bach, offering virtuosic piano music. The concert culminates in Arnold Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night, 1899), inspired by Richard Dehmel's poem. This composition caused a stir at its premiere, encountering even riots and resistance due to its use of dissonance.
Terra Memoria opens the door to a musical world filled with beauty and depth.
