The Musical Treasure Chest of the North
The Musical Treasure Chest of the North bringing long-forgotten 18th- and 19th-century folk melodies and dance tunes from Northern Ostrobothnia back to life in fresh, vibrant arrangements. The concert transports listeners to the atmosphere of village gatherings and farmhouse parlours, to a time when music was the heart of the community, the sound of celebration, and a source of pride for skilled musicians.
With its exceptionally rich melodic language, driving rhythms, and energetic ensemble playing, the music brings back to life a tradition that once flourished along the river valleys of Northern Ostrobothnia. In this concert, past and present meet as historic folk fiddler music is given new life in the hands of skilled musicians. The performers include professional folk musicians, young fiddlers, and instrumentalists from across generations. The concert’s musical curator is folk music multi-instrumentalist and tradition bearer Antti Järvelä, known for his deep knowledge of folk traditions, inspiring vision, and ability to create large-scale musical productions.
The concert is presented in collaboration with the Folk Music Association Rällä and is part of the association’s *Village Anthems – The North’s Musical Treasure Trove* project, included in the Oulu2026 cultural programme.
