The over 400-page graphic novel, based on the life of the Soviet Union’s most famous composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975), is a decades-spanning portrayal of the artist, his era, and his contemporaries. The composer’s career encompassed both international acclaim and life-threatening depths: at its core is the precarious relationship between Shostakovich and Stalin, which seems not to end even with the death of one of them. Along the way, supporting figures include theatre director Vsevolod Meyerhold, actress Zinaida Reich, and poet Anna Akhmatova, among others. Toward the end of the book, music journalist Jaani Länsiö has written an essay on Dmitri Shostakovich.
