The joint concert of Maija Kauhanen and the duo hakosalo_tuohino (Osmo Hakosalo and Jussi Tuohino) takes the listener from the roots of the archaic kantele tradition towards experimental contemporary folk music and futuristic improvisation. The concert features works by Kauhanen and hakosalo_tuohino both together and separately.
Specializing in the Saarijärvi kantele, Maija Kauhanen is a multi-instrumentalist known for her unique, experimental musical expression, blending folk music with influences from the modern world. hakosalo_tuohino is a duo formed by Osmo Hakosalo and Jussi Tuohino, whose music arises from the encounter between the kantele and the computer, creating a distinctive sonic experience where the sound of the kantele expands through electroacoustic techniques into immersive soundscapes. This site-specific concert draws a temporal arc through music, encompassing both the archaic history of the kantele and its presence as a living instrument resonating in new contexts.
The concert is part of the Ikiaika project organized by Village Athems, which is included in the OULU2026 European Capital of Culture program. Ikiaika combines the ancient tradition of runo singing and the kantele with the possibilities of contemporary music and technology.
