Michael Brecker (1949–2007) was one of the leading figures of the modern tenor saxophone and among the most sought-after musicians of the late twentieth century and the turn of the millennium. His technically virtuosic and astonishingly expressive playing can be heard on more than 900 recordings, ranging from jazz and jazz fusion to classic pop recordings.
This concert focuses on Michael Brecker’s own recordings as a leader, particularly Michael Brecker (1987), Tales From The Hudson (1996), Two Blocks From The Edge (1998), and Pilgrimage (2007). The repertoire represents modern jazz at its finest, strongly rooted in the jazz tradition while also drawing influences from a variety of musical styles, including fusion harmonies, funk rhythms, and the memorable melodies of popular music.
The music will be interpreted by an international jazz ensemble built around pianist Tuomas J. Turunen, bassist Mikko Pellinen, and drummer Anssi Tirkkonen. They are joined by award-winning saxophonist Kristian Brink, based in Stockholm, and guitarist Olli Hirvonen, who is active in New York. The ensemble performs compositions closely associated with Brecker while also leaving room for musical surprises.
