Oulu Music Festival brings opera to Oulu as a streamed performance in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet!
“Pohjalaisia” is the first opera direction by Paavo Westerberg , known from theatre and film, and it premiered at the Finnish National Opera in 2024. Leevi Madetoja's (1887–1947) Pohjalaisia has not been called Finland’s national opera without reason. It is a story of perseverance, human rights, and freedom. Pohjalaisia has retained its popularity as the most frequently performed Finnish opera—but how much has Finland changed in the meantime? Now Pohjalaisia receives a new interpretation in the hands of top creators. Westerberg’s direction moves powerfully from scene to scene with striking imagery, and the gripping production is set in a potato field.
Before the screening, a discussion event will be held at Star Movie Theater; the speakers will be announced later. The screening is part of Oulu Music Festival’s Oulu2026 project Sävelten silta (Bridge of Melodies).
