Nordnorsk Jazzensemble continues its journey into an unknown Kven landscape. Together with the internationally acclaimed composer and trumpeter Arve Henriksen, they have created the Kaipu project, which highlights, reshapes, and brings Kven culture into a new light in the spirit of jazz and improvisation.
Kaipu—meaning longing and yearning—describes the current situation of Kven culture. There is a longing for something the Kven people have lost. A yearning for cultural forms of expression that once existed but had no opportunity to be passed on or to develop further. This is present in the lives of many Kven people today. The aim of the project is to reflect some of these experiences, with Kaipu playing a central role.
Through small- and large-scale soundscapes, we encounter reworked old Kven songs, hymns, texts, rhymes, verses, and melodies—all in the spirit of improvisation.
The music and texts have been composed, interpreted, and re-arranged by Viktor Wilhelmsen, Svein Schultz, Mariann Torset, Frida Lydia Hansen, and Arve Henriksen.
