Pianist Juho Valjakka founded his first piano trio in 2010, and since then has focused his artistic work especially on the trio format. He has always been inspired by the sensitivity and versatility of the ensemble, as well as the search for new tones within traditional instrumentation. The current line-up, which has been in operation since 2018 together with bassist Oskari Siirtola and drummer Anssi Tirkkonen, represents Valjakka's current vision of the piano trio, drawing from its history and at the same time reaching towards the future.
With their debut album Liminal Spaces (2022), Valjakka and his trio bring their own personal and nuanced musical world to the public. The band shapes Valjaka's harmonically rich compositions into a fresh tonal field for playful and reactive playing, where different rhythmic patterns and levels play an important role. In addition, two classical compositions from the repertoire of Duke Ellington's orchestra have been selected for the new album, which complement the album that reflects Valjakan's experiences as a young artist.
