Guitarist Teemu Viinikainen is a master of strong athmosphere, and whose playing is based on scarcity. He plays with a zen focus, which is independent of any performance.
Within the Oulu Music Festival, Viinikainen celebrates the release of his career´s first solo guitar album Songs of Silence. The songs are solo arrangements of the work of such well-known authors as Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. The album features elements typical to the instrumentalist and soulful perfomer, such as expressiveness, swing and virtuosity. However, the main sensations of the songs are the strong presence, sensitivity and beautiful sound of the guitar.
The event begins with a documentary about Viinikainen, entitled “Hiljaisuus... ja äänen synty” ("Silence... and the birth of sound"), which, in addition to Viinikainen himself, features the actor Hannu-Pekka Björkman and the master luthier A-P. Paasonen. The starting point of the documentary, directed and written by Tommi E. Virtanen, was telling how to build a new guitar for Viinikainen and to discuss how these top experts in their field are looking for the perfect sound in their professions. However, with Viinikainen's worsening tinkering, a story was formed about how he had to rebuild his entire career and relationship with silence.
