Drummer and experimental musician Tatu Rönkkö brings to Oulu Music Festival his solo project City is a Drum, in which he plays buildings, structures and objects in public urban space and modifies their sounds with electronic effects. Rönkkö has previously played e.g. people's kitchens (I Play Your Kitchen, 2013-2016) and for him any sounding object or material is a possible instrument.
The percussionist approaches objects by drumming, rubbing, shaking and clapping, and by using electronic effects he creates unique instruments from everyday objects. The fact that the concert venue is an everyday environment is important, so that anyone can come and follow the spontaneously progressing performance up close if they want. "I'm interested in bringing people together to the edge of something new and strange. You don't even need to understand experimental music, it's enough to dare to let yourself be carried away by the sound," characterizes Rönkkö.
On Saturday 18.3. Tatu Rönkkö plays two concerts at the Oulu music festival in the same afternoon, in two different places: in a playground in Ainola park and on Kaarlenväylä Bridge.
Tatu Rönkkö (b. 1983, Kuopio) has performed solo around the world, e.g. in St. Merry's Cathedral in Paris, Oulanga National Park in Kuusamo, and private people's kitchens in Berlin, Estonia and Helsinki. In addition, he plays drums, e.g. in the following lineups: Efterklang, Lampen and K-X-P.
