Trumpeter Trumpetist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra lead the jazz anniversary celebrations
Nine-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Trumpetist will perform with the 15-member Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on December 2 in Oulu, the European Capital of Culture. The concert will also feature the orchestra’s own Big Band Holidays program, where jazz meets the spirit of Christmas. The ensemble’s vocalists include Catherine Russell and Georgia Heers.
Marsalis is one of the world’s leading jazz musicians and the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He was born in New Orleans in 1961 and is the son of the esteemed jazz pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis Jr. He made his recording debut in 1982 and has since recorded over 100 jazz and classical albums.
He has won nine Grammy Awards, and his jazz oratorio Blood on the Fields is the first jazz work to have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Marsalis remains the only musician to have won Grammy Awards in two categories—jazz and classical—in the same year.
Marsalis has established himself as an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, and advocate of American culture. As a composer, his body of work includes over 600 original compositions.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra consists of 15 top-level jazz soloists and ensemble players. The orchestra has served as the resident orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1988 and spends more than a third of the year touring around the world. Its repertoire is wide-ranging, spanning from rare historical compositions to works commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The visit to Finland is especially significant, as Wynton Marsalis will step down from his leadership role at Jazz at Lincoln Center after four decades next year.
