Franz Schubert's beloved song cycle 'Die schöne Müllerin' will be heard in Oulu Music Festival’s chamber music series performed by baritone Tomi Punkeri and pianist Keval Shah.
'Die schöne Müllerin' (translated as 'The Beautiful Miller's Daughter') is a lied cycle composed by Franz Schubert, featuring texts by poet Wilhelm Müller. The song cycle is central to the lied literature, encompassing twenty songs that portray both optimistic and tragic emotions.
At the start of the series, a man, himself a miller, wanders along the stream and becomes enchanted by it. Upon arriving at the mill, he falls in love with the miller's daughter who lives there. Initially, things seem to progress favorably between the man and the miller's daughter, but it soon becomes apparent that the girl loves another. The desperate protagonist throws himself into the stream. The final song in the series is a lullaby sung by the river to the hero lying at its bottom.
Baritone Tomi Punkeri has performed as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Danish Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia, and Kymi Sinfonietta. His oratorio and lied repertoire includes works such as J. S. Bach's St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, and Christmas Oratorio. Punkeri has received recognition in numerous singing competitions at both national and international levels.
Keval Shah has swiftly risen to the forefront of a new generation of pianists. Since 2020, he has served as a lecturer in lied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He divides his time leading the academy's lied program, performing concerts across Europe, and engaging as a busier visiting instructor, artistic curator, and radio personality.
