Sumapulaus is a quartet whose members have been part of Oulu’s jazz scene from the 1970s to the present day. Double bass artist Harri Sarkkinen, who made his career in the Oulu Symphony Orchestra, and saxophonist Markku Rinta-Pollari, now based in Jyväskylä, are both originally from the Pateniemi district of Oulu and began their musical journeys in the 1970s with blues and rock.
Drum maestro Tane Räsänen entered Oulu’s jazz scene in the 1990s, having earned his stripes in the professionally active regional ensemble of Kainuu, the Kajaani Quartet. Coincidentally, he also settled in Pateniemi and went on to train many young drum talents at the Oulu Conservatory before relocating to the landscapes of Lapland.
Räsänen and Sarkkinen formed Oulu’s most swinging and dynamic jazz rhythm section, and they gained national recognition as members of the Kantonen-Heinilä Quartet, among others. Tuomas J. Turunen is a more recent addition to the Oulu scene and works as a senior lecturer in music at Oulu University of Applied Sciences. Originally from Karelia and a jazz master's graduate from the Sibelius Academy, this piano virtuoso is among Finland’s top jazz musicians. In addition to leading his own trio, he has performed with several acclaimed groups, including those of Aili Ikonen and Elena Mindru.
The band’s music consists mainly of compositions by Markku Rinta-Pollari, along with some of the best pop hits that shaped the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s.
The band’s veterans found diving into the challenges of interpreting the new repertoire so thrilling that the ensemble was named in reference to the Pateniemi sawmill and the log rafts that floated in front of it—where, back in the 1960s, young boys would dive between the logs, heedless of the dangers.
