Astor Piazzolla's most beloved compositions and arrangements come to life through the performances of bandoneon artist Henrik Sandås, conductor Maria Itkonen, and the Oulu Symphony Orchestra.
Piazzolla's arrangements of tango's golden age pieces transform into sophisticated yet passionate concert tangos in the hands of Sandås. The melancholic bandoneon and lyrical violin narrate tales from an almost magical world within Buenos Aires' forgotten tango neighborhoods - stories of joy, sorrow, love, loss, and solitude.
Piazzolla developed a music style based on the traditional Argentine tango, which he called 'tango nuevo,' the new tango. This new music of Buenos Aires was a masterful blend of the exotic, romanticism, and various music styles.
Piazzolla also composed numerous arrangements of traditional Argentine tangos. Sandås has curated a five-part series for the concert from Piazzolla's arrangements for tango octet written in the 1960s. The concert will feature compositions from composers such as Fernando Franco, Eduardo Arolas, Angel Gregorio Villoldo, and of course, Astor Piazzolla.
Bandoneon artist Henrik Sandås' repertoire includes Argentine tango, tango nuevo, baroque music, contemporary classical music, and improvisation. His personal, experiential, and storytelling approach to music has touched audiences and garnered appreciation within music circles across Europe and South America.
