Schubert composed the song series Winterreise in his last years and revised the printed version of the work in the last days of his life. The composition has become the most illustrious work of the lied repertoire, being constantly performed and recorded.
Winterreise contains 24 songs that describe the main character's aimless journey away from the house of his beloved who abandoned him. Along the way, various things contribute to the creation of a poem. Through these constructions of people and natural phenomena that he encounters, the main character mirrors in his grief.
The poems form a continuum, but so detached that most poems could be repositioned without compromising the logic of the story. The first songs are set in the city from where the main character leaves. In later songs, the journey continues beyond the city and to other villages.
Winterreise will be performed within the Oulu Music Festival 2023 by baritone Arttu Kataja and pianist Pauliina Tukiainen. The duo's first album together, Serios Songs (Alba Classics), was nominated for Yle's Album of the Year 2020 and the 2021 Emma Award for Best Classical Music Album. They released Schubert's Winterreise album in January 2022.
