Anu Komsi and Marzi Nyman are returning to the Oulu Music Festival!
The duo's collaboration began over a decade ago, and Duke Ellington's Sacred Concerts have become their magnum opus. Sacred Concerts is a multi-part spiritual work with solo parts written for a high soprano voice.
Ellington himself instructed in the performance notes of this large multipart work that each performance can be different regardless of the ensemble. This is the guideline the duo has followed. The piece has been performed with various organs in medieval as well as modern churches. Expect joyous, solemn, and wild gospel as per Ellington's instructions.
The rest of the concert program is a blend of improvisation, well-known opera arias, and hymn arrangements featuring composers such as Jean Sibelius, Giacomo Puccini, Pekka Pohjola, and Elliott Carter. The performers might surprise both themselves and the audience.
