Pierrot Lunaire (Moonstruck Pierrot) is Arnold Schönberg's avant-garde melodrama from 1912. The piece is written for soprano and a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and piano, set to the text of Albert Giraud. Having achieved cult classic status, the work follows the story of the Pierrot character, dealing with themes of love, madness, and death. The dreamlike atmosphere emerges from the soprano's use of Sprechstimme, a vocal technique that blends speech and singing, allowing the performer to navigate between spoken word and melody. Maria Ylipää's exceptional stage charisma and Carl Knif's magnificent direction lead the audience into Pierrot's mad world.
In the second half of the concert we hear pieces originating from or inspired by the cultural pressure cooker of early 20th-century Berlin, including music from the Babylon Berlin series, Spoliansky, and Marzi Nyman.
