OASBB feat. Kalle Kalima: Pulp Friction

Guitarist-composer Kalle Kalima, who has long resided in Berlin and upheld the reputation of Finnish jazz in Central Europe, joins forces with Oulu All Star Big Band at the Oulu Music Festival.

The concert will feature Kalima's composition, 'Pulp Friction (Tarantino Suite),' inspired by Quentin Tarantino's film productions. Kalima wrote the piece originally for the NDR Bigband in 2012. The piece intriguingly blends a big band sound with 70s funk vibes and the ambiance of police films.

Siinä hän elokuvassa Pulp Fiction esittää Jules nimistä hahmoa, joka on kovapintainen gangsteri ja tappaja, mutta kokee elokuvan aikana valaistuksen ja päättää ryhtyä maata kiertäväksi mietiskelijämunkiksi. Tuo elokuva ja sen kummalliset hahmot tekivät minuun suuren vaikutuksen. Yhdistelmä trash-toimintaelokuvaa ja syvällistä moniulotteista dialogia oli minulle täysin uutta. Musiikin käyttöä elokuvassa oli minusta erityisen onnistunutta ja monitasoista. Surfrock ja hikinen 70-luvun funk antoivat kuville mehukkaat raamit ja huumori kukkii pinnan alla, kun Tarantino vapaa assosiaation voimalla yhdistelee tuttuja elementtejä uudeksi kokonaisuudeksi.” – Kalle Kalima

Performing alongside Kalima will be the Oulu All Star Big Band (OASBB), which consists of music professionals from Oulu. The band was established in 2005 and it has produced over a hundred new big band productions. OASBB has gained immense popularity as a presenter of big band music and as a group that boldly breaks musical boundaries.

Conducting the concert will be Mikko Hassinen.
