Guitarist-composer Kalle Kalima, who has long resided in Berlin and upheld the reputation of Finnish jazz in Central Europe, joins forces with Oulu All Star Big Band at the Oulu Music Festival.
The concert will feature Kalima's composition, 'Pulp Friction (Tarantino Suite),' inspired by Quentin Tarantino's film productions. Kalima wrote the piece originally for the NDR Bigband in 2012. The piece intriguingly blends a big band sound with 70s funk vibes and the ambiance of police films.
"When I was 20, I had a poster of Samuel Jackson on my wall. He portrayed the character Jules in the movie Pulp Fiction, a tough gangster and killer who experiences enlightenment during the film and decides to become a wandering philosopher monk. The movie and its peculiar characters had a great impact on me. The combination of trash action movies and the profound, multi-dimensional dialogue was entirely new to me. The use of music in the film was particularly successful and multi-layered. Surf rock and sweaty 70s funk provided juicy frames for the scenes, and humor blossoms beneath the surface as Tarantino, with the power of free association, combines familiar elements into a new whole." - Kalle Kalima
Performing alongside Kalima will be the Oulu All Star Big Band (OASBB), which consists of music professionals from Oulu. The band was established in 2005 and it has produced over a hundred new big band productions. OASBB has gained immense popularity as a presenter of big band music and as a group that boldly breaks musical boundaries.
Conducting the concert will be Mikko Hassinen.
