Finland's best jazz musicians will perform during the Oulu Music Festival 2023 compositions from Mika Kallio's fourth album GONG ODYSSEY. The album was released in June 2022 and, as the name implies, the main instrumental element are the gongs. The compositions sway in accordance with the nature of the gongs, between ambient and improvised music.
Kallio has gathered around him a diverse and creative jazz musicians group that master not only their main instruments, but also the devout art of playing gongs. In addition to his own trio, Jussi Fredriksson is a member of Pope Puolitaival Nordic 4, among others. Woodwind specialist Max Zenger leads his own band Globus and can be heard Kaisa's Machine group, among others. Drummer Jaska Lukkarinen can be seen and heard in Timo Lassy's Trio and the Ricky-Tick Big Band, among others. Mika Kallio himself plays in Jussi Fredriksson Trio and Verneri Pohjola Quartet, among others.
