Queen Christina (1626–1689) is undoubtedly one of the most captivating figures in Swedish history. When King Gustavus Adolphus II (1594–1632) fell at the Battle of Lützen on November 6, 1632, his six-year-old daughter became his only heir to the throne. Christina received a well-rounded education, growing into a significant European influencer with a keen interest in culture. Her radical decision to abdicate and convert to Catholicism was a major scandal of the time, earning her widespread notoriety across Europe. This concert takes us through Christina’s life with music, from the Stockholm court to her later years in Rome. Featured composers include Jean-Baptiste Lully, Joseph Chabanceau de la Barre, and Antonio Cesti.
Earthly Angels was founded in 2016 by Kajsa Dahlbäck during her studies at the DocMus doctoral school at the Sibelius Academy. Their debut album, which features Italian music from 17th-century convents, was named YLE’s Album of the Year 2018. Earthly Angels brings together leading Finnish early music musicians along with guest artists from Europe. Their second album, *La rêveuse*, was released in 2021 to high praise. The ensemble focuses on an intense, embodied connection between text and music, striving to uncover intriguing forgotten music and breathe new life into it for contemporary audiences.
