In the late 1940s, Erik Bergman and Einar Englund wanted to be radical and challenge the traditions of Sibelius’ music and national romanticism. However, Sibelius only praised and encouraged them, and when listened to from today's perspective, their modernism sounds humane, gentle and inviting. Bergman and Englund seem to have many other things in common with Sibelius than just the fact that they all spoke Swedish as their mother tongue.
